"Driven from every other corner of the earth, Freedom of Thought and The Right of Private Judgement in matters of conscience direct their course to this happy country as their last asylum." Samuel Adams - 1776
and so do the vendors who push it!

Arrgh. Having just dealt with yet another PC which had a preloaded 90-day trial AV when they bought it - three years ago -, I had to vent. DELL, HP/COMPAQ, SONY, pretty much everybody who does this, I hate you. You both suck and blow. Like Megamaid. Go watch SpaceBalls.

I doubt that 3 in 10 people actually go buy the AV package (assuming they understand that the need to in the first place) and the response is almost always the same: "Yeah, I have a virus program", (I bite my tongue on the obvious response...).

*sigh* I guess it keeps the shops busy, but I still occasionally ponder if perhaps the conspiracy theorists aren't right and the AV vendors do some moonlighting as virus writers.

PC manufacturers often strike deals for software which requires them to pre-load software. I hate it too, I wiped my PC when I got it and clean installed XP, but it's the way things are.

And what's wrong with SpaceBalls? Maybe the power of the Schwartz was a bit weak but it was worth it for the Barf gag...

There are some companies that do premades without frontloading it with junk. ibuypower, for example, does a barebones OS installation, plus any software that comes with your devices (like they would install the dvd player/decoder software for your blu ray drive). Anything else you have to ask them to install when you're putting together your system.

It's just a shame the more mainstream companies put all that crap on there

Ya. when I got my old dell pc. I found that it had mcafee, one of the ram hogging anti out there. So I reinstalled Windows wiped everything clean, now I got even better one. One that is better in value and one that doens't use that much ram

It isn't actually the pre-installed AV that bothers me, it's the fact that it is (usually) only a 90-day license and often the buyer thinks, "Oh, it came with anti-virus so I'm ok" and never go any further.

And SpaceBalls is an AWESOME movie. "So what does that make us? Absolutely nothing!!! BWAHAHA HAHAHA".
